Default engine noise

Ive got a 84 jalpa,30000 kms on it, but recently i was driving and it started making the bad noise, i believe it is lower engine not entirely sure, it will still turn over with the coil wire off, is there a way to check the bottom end without removing the engine?

Unfortunately not, you have to pull the engine, but is oil pressure OK?
You could change the oil and check for abrassives first.

When the engine is cold the V8 can have some knocking noise, what can also be a point is the piston bolt, this is a known weak part.

Check your oil by rubbing it between your index and thumb, you will probaly notice some very tiny pieces of metal, should like some bearings with rod or main let go - happened to my Urraco. Best you so not drive the car.

As Raymond asked how is the oil pressure? What was it like when you noticed the noise? Was every thing in check pressure and water temperature? What makes you think it is the bottom end? I definately would not be cranking it over if its making noise. It could be a broken valve, and cranking it will just cause further damage to the cylinder head and block. Do a leak down test on all cylinders to verify its not a valve. Then proceed from there. Best of luck, Sincerely Vic

Don't turn the engine on. I am in the exact same boat. I had the exact same thing happen last summer. I was on a drive and started hearing a banging or clanking sound coming from the heart of the engine. Other than the noise it ran perfectly. Oil presure started dropping a little.

I shut it off and towed it to Lamborghini Portland. They suspected it was a rod or cam issue, since the car still ran perfeclty smooth other than the noise. (I think a broken valve would make the engine run poorly, or a least different.)

What ever is wrong, the engine needs to come out and come appart.

I plan to send my car to Evan's Auto. I recommend finding a Jalpa expert to do a rebuild.

Sorry, but I think you are in for a bit of a project.

I am waiting for my old house to sell before I can afford this. Double mortgages for 16 months is holding up my project. Wish I could tell you exactly what was found, but I haven't gotten into it yet. Please keep me posted about your project and I will keep you posted on mine.

Default Engine Noise

Since the engine was leaking quite a bit of oil anyways My brother and I removed the Car from the engine. We found that if you placed the front tires on a couple of 2x6 you can avoid having to remove the front valance. It took some time but the engine is out. We arent too sure what is wrong yet but Ill keep you posted. Does anyone know where to get all the gaskets and what all else we will need to rebuild this Jalpa.?

Best is to get everything from an official dealership, overhoul the waterpump as well when you open the engine anyway.

What VIN is your car? Pictures of the procedure?

George Evans is a good source of parts for the Jalpa, he you have followed Ross's engine rebuild you can see the sort of work he does. I sourced a complete gasket set, included all gaskets, seals, orings and valve stem seals. I also sourced the stainless steel valves from George also. the orginal sodium filled valves are prone to failure and should be replaced. A lot of people also recommend changing the pistons as they are not the best quality. You should also register on Raymonds site Lamborghini Jalpa Home Page there is plenty of information on that site that is not available to the public on what modifications you should make to the Jalpa. I will PM you George's email.
Mike
