I decided it was time to get a new exhaust put on to my Jalpa, I found a custom exhaust place I though would do a good job. Told the peole I was after a stainless steel exhaust to replace my current mild steel exhaust that is looking rusty and is leaking. I advised that I wanted to stay as close to original as possible and to use the mandrel bends. As I live in Australia it was going to be too hard and expensive to get the Stebro system sent across (Which doesn't some with the pipe to go to the front set of extractors. mine needed replacing). They seemed to be on the right track when I took the picture of the parts, though I wasn't happy with the balancing between the left and right systems, they said that there was a hole between the welding highlighted buy the red circle. The "fitter" had also said that the "laser cut" stainless steel flange plates were not up to sratch as you can see by the red oblong circle the drilled holes were not central, and that he had asked the manufacturer to have them remade. This made me feel much better about the work he was doing.
When he told me the car was ready I came down for a look and the second photo is what I saw I said that this was NOT acceptable, you can see that the mufflers are mounted on an angle, marked by the yellow circle. You can also see the pipe above the muffler, not sure what they were thinking when they did that, certainly nothing like the original system. If you look closely you can just see the tow hook I think. This exhaust would scrap on anything in reverse. They took it back and started again. I lost some of the mandrel bends that they had initially put in to make things more compact. Not sure why they chose 2 1/4 inch pipe that they did I'm sure the original wasn't that thick. Finally I got the car back with the exhaust much more in the location I wanted it You can see the height difference marked by the green arrow in picture 3. I need to get the car to pass a police inspection so unfortunately I have had to go with some quite mufflers You can also see that they have a better collection setup this time around![]()

Rufus, I need to get the car to pass police inspection, so I had to get Chambered mufflers fitted, I was going to try and get them to fit two sets but it all got to hard in the end. they would of had to makeup another 8 flanges and I dont think it would have looked too good from the rear if you could see all that, the car is really pretty quite, 90DB is the leagal limit in Australia at 3/4 RPM and I will be slightly over that. I am still having a few problems with the MSD ignition so I need to sort that out before inspection, I may have BAD high tension leads I will get the Ohm readings to see if any are bad, I am reasonably sure the rest of the wiring is OK.

What's the problem with the MSD?

The car starts Ok but when I touch the throttle it wants to stall and the spark starts breaking down (coff & splutter) If you can get it to REV past 1200RPM it revs quite cleanly. It may start to miss a little in the higher RPM above 5000RPM, Very annoying when you are trying to take off. I am running the heavy red wire directly to the starter moter, I initially had a chasis earth but are now running a wire directly back to the negative side of the battery as recommended in the MSD intall. The Car is running so I am guessing that the rest of the wiring is OK. They talk about "keeping the trigger wires seperate from the other wires". I am runing my trigger wires into the old bosh loom so it is shared with the ign 12 power source not sure if that would be a problem or not? The High tension Leads look new (Not that I replaced them) they came with the car. So I plan to check the resistance of the leads just to see how they compare to the MSD recommendations, can't find that figure at the moment. Any suggestions appreciated :-)

In some cars there is a timing advance switch that one might cause the problem you have at 1200rpm.
TAV 4 mentions it's only on swiss cars but you never know since that part manual is from 1984 and does not include later changes. I remember having had a similar problem, what happens when you exchange the two distributor wires (purple/green)?

Ramond,
Thanks for the suggestion, it worked :-). I THOUGHT I had followed the MSD wiring instructions and the Jalpa wiring diagram to get the correct wires but obviously not. It has been one of those frustrating things where you spend the money to try and get things to run better and they don't. I will take the car for a test run next time it is off the jacks just to confirm but everything is looking good.
