If memory serves, you can do the starter without removing the engine. You will need to remove the exhaust, and cuss a lot, but it can be done.
Do you need a solenoid?
Darn, I wish I had the mini starter finished, that would be the trick.
I cannot work at this time anyway, so all I can do is wish.

Make sure your battery and cables are good. These will have the same symptoms as you describe.

ive checked all the cables, if i bridge the terminals on the starter it starts but if i bridge from the signal wire on the starter to the posative it just clicks. this makes me think its the solenoid.
whats the mini starter chad? if it is the solenoid then i will be needing one.
thanks for your help guys

I have been working on a small starter for the Lambo's, but just do not have the time to finish it. It only weighs around 8 lb and is very small when next to the big Bosch starter now on the car.
If it is the solenoid, I have one.
If it starts when you bridge the wires, then you are having a voltage loss through that part of the system. Use a volt meter and check your voltages at different points along, like at the starter, the batt wire to the starter and the switch wire at the starter.

Dear Lamborghinisti,

I was speaking to Mike D of Evans Automotive. He mentioned that on the early Diablos they have a large starter....the engine must come out.

He said that they changed the starter to a smaller model around 96 and that one can come off without the engine-out.

A Diablo is like a hot tall thin blonde. Sooo seductive, you just keep putting up with her crap. Buying her high-heels or headers, you know she costs you a fortune. But riding her....oh soooo good!

ok finaly i have just got the starter out of my diablo and i did it without removing the engine or even the exhaust manifold! i went in through the oil filter/battery access panel and then cut i trangular hole out of the exterior of the two heat shield. like this it is really quite easy!
but i would like to put a small starter back in chad?? have you finished it yet? if not i guess i will be needing a solenoid.
