Rick, I don't know how to link to the thread that I started, "Jalpa Performance Misconceptions", but it lists some of the performance figures from cars that were actually road tested". Raymond indicated in his follow-up post that Automobil Revue" which always does reliable testing recorded 0-62mph (100kph) in 6.5s with 2 people on board! Again, I think very few cars were actually tested and unfortunately the most commonly cited figure is the 0-60mph time of 7.3s by Road & Track. Again, it's important to remember that this test was conducted in the US with all of the later California emissions add-ons. Finally you will be impressed if you drive one. I think you will be pleasently surprised when you see Jason's car. As I indicated in my post, it's the best handling car I've ever owned and that includes Porsche and Ferrari. I doubt much is out there that will keep up with it on a winding track and even my neighbor conceeds that it handles (he says almost) like his ultra modern Lotus Exige. My Porsche 944 Turbo S with 250bhp made the Jalpa look aged, in both acceleration and road handling, perhaps that was one reason too I hardly drove the jalpa anymore and finally sold it.
My 944 was chipped and had 295bhp with 450Nm torque.

Thanks everyone for the responses and info. I did download a lot of mag. articles from www.jalpa.ch website, and see there were some test results that were much better.
I am looking forward to seeing Jason's car tomorrow. But I'm afraid he wants more than I am able to spend on a car, since I'm also facing expense of my 400GT 2+2 restoration. My thoughts on a 328 were more wishful thinking (out loud) than anything. My logical side won't let me spend that much. This obviously limits the number of exotics that I can consider. Another question on the Jalpa - what emissions equipment came originally with these cars? Did they come with cats and/or air pump? I'm asking because the Phoenix area (whole county) has an annual emissions testing program. They do visual checks for cats and air pump, if they think it was manufactured with one. I had to re-retrofit cats to my 308GT4 for this reason, which GTCP helped me locate. Luckily, in April this year, the EPA signed off on legislation which allows collector cars to avoid emissions testing, if they are insured under a collector car policy.... with the associated driving limits. Thanks again. Rick |
