Default Jalpa Pricing

Hello Everyone - I just joined this group. I own a 400GT 2+2 that's ready for restoration (IE- I've taken it apart and it's in a million pieces in my garage and spare bedroom). I am thinking of buying a Jalpa, and am interested in input on current pricing for very well-cared-for Jalpas. What would a car with low miles, very good clean cosmetics, and well kept (newer belts, seals, hoses, good tune), etc. be worth in today's market? I haven't decided on a car, but live in the Phoenix area, and see the one on Ebay in the area. I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks!
Rick Schumm

A higher end condition car will go for mid thirtys or more right now. A tune up is a very easy thing to fix and cheap. The body and engine are much more important than the current tune up. Some of the cheaper cars have not been taken care of, but that is not always the case, and if you are looking for a fixer up then a cheaper car is the way to go.

Welcome to the forum.
As others have mentioned depending on the condition, Jalpa's can be had for as low as the mid 20's to the mid to high 40's. I will also mention (IMO) that it is important to try and find a Jalpa that has the full tool kit, spare tire, owners manual and kept as original as possible. Also a one owner car has it's benefits as well. I spent 28K for my 84 Jalpa 1 year ago. It was a one owner car so I was able to benefit from everything discussed above, however the engine had many leaks. (the car had been driven only in the summer and had less than 16,000 kilometers in 23 years) The shocks were inoperatable and the springs were slammed causing the car to rub the front tires on the front fenders. There were many other issues too many to mention. Needless to say I repaired almost everything mechanical and electrical. It took almost 8 months and cost over 20K for parts and labor. Even if I wanted to sell my Jalpa I would not as I have too much into it, and I haven't even repainted it yet, which it will need very shortly. As you are new to the site have a look at the thread below outlining all the work done to my car and all the help received from all on this forum. Good luck.

thanks for the plug.

Whats funny is at this very momemet, there is a white Jalpa on Ebay that came off the assembly line one before mine(12276). I called on it just to see what it was all about. The sales person had no answers about the service history except for a binder that he had somewhere and there was a bunch of work done to it. Asked the obvious, were the valves done? Uh, dont think they need it was his reply. How is the electrical? Everything works, is what he said.

There is a big difference between cars that start and go down the road and those that will last without headaches. Unfortunately, price does not always follow this logic.

I have personally seen and driven in Topcarbons black jalpa thats on ebay currently. If you are looking for a Jalpa and you live in Arizona..this is a match made in heaven, It's a very, very clean car that looks fantastic and runs great!! Has the very important access panel behind the seat to easily change the spark plugs too. Go for it.

Thanks everyone for replies. Jason's car seems fantastic! I was in touch with him via email, and decided that he probably wants more than I'd be willing to pay for a Jalpa at this time. I'm just going to be patient and take my time. I was disappointed in ~8sec 0-60 times for the 308GT4 that I purchased in 1992, and sold 4yrs ago, and the Jalpa seems similar. So I'd prefer sometihng with more guts than the 308, but not too outrageous in price. I have also considered getting a 328, which seems to have better low-end performance than the Jalpa. I'm somewhat familiar with Laust's work on his Jalpa (custom turbo conversion I believe) from the Yahoo VLG group. But I'm not ready to tackle that unless it was basically bolt-on. Actually, although not as exciting in character, the NSX has a lot to say for it.

Besides, the 400 restoration is going to provide plenty of challenges, and keep me plenty busy. I'm familiar with exotic restoration challenges from the '65 275GTB I restored myself (on an engineer's salary) in the 80's. This was with lots of help from Bill Young at GT Car parts and Bob Wallace, when he had is shop off of 24th st. in Phoenix. I sold that one in '92.

Anyway, thanks again.

Rick

The Jalpa will leave a 308 for dead and keep nicely with a 328. At least mine did. They are far better looking and much more rare as well. Love the 400 you have, and think it is a great choice, but the Jalpa is much more dynamic than that car as well. You can't go wrong for the price. A Countach is worth more than double but is nowhere near double the car.
Good luck.
