G'Day from downunder
I was wondering if it is normal for the rear fog lights to turn off when the high beam lights are turned on? The front fog lights stay on. I have had some people suggest this is normal operation for fog lights. We dont have much need for them in Australia but I just want them to be working correctly. |

Sounds very strange, on my former FLA12203 the high beam were the fog lights in the front spoiler.
Perhaps I misunderstand something, what is the high beam in your understanding. In europe we call them parking light (those in the front bumper) headlights (normal frog eye headlights) high beam (fog lights in front spoiler) flasher (fog lights in front spoiler) In my understanding the rear foglights should work as soon as the parking lights are on (#18 switch with the small bulb), the driving lights (#19 switch with the big bulb) should not effect the rear fog light. #44 Front foglight switch, #45 Rear foglight switch. On my car there was no way to use the "fog" lights in the spoiler except as high beams and flasher.

Raymond, Thanks for the quick reply. I have also included this image from the drivers manual to help explain. The popup lights have a low & high beam on my car, I will confirm to see if when I have the high beams on that the fog lights are on also. I will try and discribe my configuration.
When I press switch#18 (Parking lights) dash light 6 comes on as well as the parking lights(ones in the bumper). I don't believe I can get the fog lights to operate at this point front or rear. When I press switch#19 headlights pop up (& what I call low beam) turn on. Dash light #52 comes on. At this point I am able to turn the front fog lights on and off via switch#44(ones in the spolier). I can also turn the rear fog lights on and off via switch #45 dash light #50 comes on. When I move the indicator arm forward the Main(high) beam lights comes on The ones in the popup headlight.(I will need to check to see if the front fog lights turn on also) Dash light #8 blue light turns on, at this point dash light #50 goes out as well as the rear fog lights turning off. This also happens if I have the Low beams on and I pull the indicator arm forward to flash the lights. Hope this helps clear things up a bit Regards Mike |

I suppose the whole fog light thing depends extremely on the country the car was delivered, according to the local laws they had to configure the fog light behaviour.
Unfortunately I don't have my car anymore but I remember for sure that the fog light switch had no effect on the front fog lights, only the rear lights I was able to switch on. The flasher on my car was definitely made by the front fog lights, also the high beam, perhaps they changed also the bulbs in the headlights, my headlights were not able to flash or high beam. What VIN is your car?

Raymond,
My car is ELA12175, I believe the car was intially sold in Germany. There are no real issues I can live with the way it operates, was just wondering if there were other Jalpa owners that found there lights operated the same way, I would then accept that thas was normal :-) Regards Mike |
