Your Jalpa will surely be one of the best after that kind of paint job. From what I remember in some of your posts, you bought a Jalpa brand new. That had to be something.

Did you ever find the VIN# for your first car. There are a few ways I can think of that you might be able to track it down. (The PM came to me about an engine rebuild question I had.)

No I haven't located the VIN yet, but it just came to me that in my pic there is my Florida tag. That tag # should lead to the VIN if the DMV keeps records that long. Raymond had suggested looking into my insurance, but beleive it or not I had paid cash for the car in 86 and because of my age at the time they wanted a huge amount to cover the car, which I refused to do at the time. So.... being young and foolish I drove around for 3 years with no insurance. Pretty stupid thing to do at the time, but at 23 I thought I knew everything about life. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

OK none of the VIN ideas are tried and true, but here are some ideas I had.

DMV should have a registration record. I got a "Carfax" on my Jalpa when I bought it and the report had record of every place in the US it had been registered, every time it went to DEQ, everything. If someone sent a form to DMV regarding my car, anywhere in the US, it showed up on my vehicle history report. I thought you might be able to search One of the Jalpa registries, narrow it down to a couple possibilities and get history reports.

They only made about 410 Jalpas. Maybe half came to the US. With the year and color combo info, I bet you could narrow it down to a handful of possibilities.

DMV might have record of the registration in your name. You might be able ask them for the VIN number.

I assume you went through your own papers? Any record of purchase, sale etc?

My shop puts the VIN numbers for my cars on the maintenence records. Do you have old records for the car? Does the shop you used still exist?

I hunted for my car for 6 years without a VIN. I got a kick out of it. As far as I know, mine is the only black on black with red badges out there. Made my search easier. I will poke around and see what I come up with.

Did a quick search through Raymonds Jalpa registry. I believe your car was an 86 Red, with tan interior, and no fin. In the Registry there are 3 in the US and 1 that did not list interior color. 4 Internationaly, and 6 with no color info. Unless someone added a fin, painted it, or just didn't register it, you are looking at about 10 possibilities. The registry seems to list almost all of the cars produced. Raymond could speak to his site better than I, but you should be able to track your old car down without too much digging.

If it helps, I just read this post and I have Jalpa Vin 12282 (1986/red/tan/no fin) and I think my car was originally in Newport, Rhode Island. So that removes one from your list.

Hi Raymond,

Yes, I still "technically" have it for sale and would consider offers. But, I recently found more garage space and have thus been very lax about selling it. I was actually thinking about painting it.
