Default 1985 Countach

Hi. I am new to this group and also to exotic car collecting. I am of the age that I had a Countach poster on my wall in my teens. Now I am thinking about buying one but would like some advice. I am going to look at this car on Saturday http://adcache.exotic.collectorcartr...9/86587519.htm. I spoke to the last mechanic to work on it - Rick Hunt at huntautomotive.com. He said that he put a clutch in it for $14k. He said just the parts for the clutch were $9k and the labor was 60 hours. There were some other not so surprising things included for this $14k. What do you guys think about this pricing? How often is this level of maintenance required on these cars? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Rob

Hi Rob: There are so many things to be wary of when buying a Countach that it would require too much typing for me to list them all. I see you are from Orlando. If you would like to talk "Countach" call me at 3212140804

Ok, is it just me, or does it seem excessive that it would take an experienced technician over a WEEK to put a clutch in a car?

Totally. 60 hours for a clutch? Now, admittedly I have not put a clutch in a Countach, but sounds like they saw him coming???
Countachs' are good reliable cars if they are driven properly. Drive any Lambo like it is an NSX and you sign up for big bills.

Hi Speed2,
From your phone number it looks like you live in Brevard. I grew up over there. I'll call you. Where do you get your CT worked on? I met with Harold at the Lambo dealer in Longwood and also drove a new Gallardo. It was a great car but I don't want to pay for the depreciation. I haven't talked to him about servicing a CT yet.

The price I have heard was more like 7500 for a clutch which included more work than just that. There is a clutch on ebay, I think the buy it now price is 3k. 60 hours is crazy to put a clutch in one. The Gallardo is going to be more comfortable, drive easier, be more practical. But it's not a benchmark car like the Countach.

Replacing a clutch on a CT is: 5 hours to remove the engine 2 hours to change the parts, 6-8 hours to reinstall the engine.

BUT: once the engine is out, you normally do a lot of other things like changing all hoses, reseal several spots, check valve clearance etc.
Finally it may cost you 9k but for this money not only the clutch is done.

Rob
My mechanic is in Tampa and has worked on many CT's. Feel free to contact him after Jan 5th as he has left for Italy today for the holidays. His web site is listed below with his name and numbers. He's a very honest and upfront gentleman.

Although I agree 60 hours is overkill on time, but now lets remember. If the clutch disc alone can be replace so be it, but price out the worst case senario and you have the following:

Clutch Disc -----------$670.00
Pressure Plate ----- $4,127.00
T/O Bearing --------$3,937.00
Slave cylinder --------$543.00
Flywheel -----------$1,377.00

Total Cost of Parts only ---$10,654.00

Sincerely Vic
