For nearly three years now I've been parking my G in the valet spot in front of a restaurant in a mall called the Arboretum. In the evening I often sit out on the patio with my glass of wine, smoking a Parodi, and watching the throngs pass by my car, which is not more than about 60 feet away. Immediately next door is another restaurant, Chili's, and it too has an outdoor patio. So between these two popular restaurants, which are next to one another, and the many other business within this shopping center, there's a lot of pedestrian traffic walking by me car. Sitting there and observing peoples' reactions is quite a study in human behavior, and believe me it runs the gamut; from wildly enthusiastic kids who whip out their cell phone cameras and take multiple shots from different angles, to people who as they pass by won't even look at the car if it was on fire.

To those of us on this forum, it's hard for us to understand how people cannot be moved by seeing such a magnificent piece of automotive art, yet I have found that only a very small percentage of people actually give a rat's ass about cars. It's especially puzzling, and even more disappointing, when I see young men in their late teens and twenties, show absolutely no interest. It's not that I judge my fellow man by whether he's a car buff or not, but I can't help wondering about these people. What do they aspire to? What moves them if not a Lamborghini? Are these people the kind that Thoreau describes as being "men who live their lives in quiet desperation, and go to their graves with their song still in them?"

And it's not a matter of my being disappointed by people not showing an interest in "my car"; hell, that has absolutely nothing to do with it. I'd feel exactly the same no matter whose Lambo or which Lambo it was. To me it's like walking by the Pieta and not even turning your head.

Hello all,

Hello all,

My name is Mitchell Truong. I am the fundraising coordinator for the school of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) Student Chapter at Oregon State University. We are a composite of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Student Chapter, the Society of Biological Engineers (SBE) Student Chapter and the Environmental Engineers Student Organization (EESO).

Within the next year I would like to organize a fundraising event to benefit CBEE, similar to the Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo charity rides at Cannon Beach, OR last April, and I am in search of owners/drivers of exotic cars willing to volunteer to help out. I intend to build the event (date, time, etc.) with input from the volunteers, so this will be a fun and ideal event for everyone.

Attached is an informational sheet containing a general description of the event, what the OSU CBEE student chapter is, and my contact info. Just check out the sheet and shoot me an email if you have any questions or would like to know more about how you can volunteer! If you have already decided that you would like to be a volunteer, in the email let me know and I will put you on the mailing list, so we may consult you when putting the fundraiser together, and so we can send you official updates as the event develops.

I will be attending the Keizer Cars and Coffee on August 28th, and the Portland Cars and Coffee on September 11th to meet interested drivers and to hand out this informational sheet to those not on this forum. I will be wearing a bright orange OSU baseball cap, so look for me!

Cheers,

Mitchell Truong

Note: I could note attach the word document because it had graphics in it that exceeded the file size limit of this forum. Below is the text from the informational sheet.

CBEE “Day of Exotic Proportions” (DEP)

The vision: To set up a fundraiser at Oregon State University in scenic Corvallis, Oregon organized by the Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) Student Chapter. We are looking for owners/drivers of exotic cars interested in volunteering their time to give rides at a charity event in October, or April (dates are tentative, in consideration of weather). This will give drivers one last excuse to get together before the winter season or a first opportunity to bring their cars out of hibernation after the rain passes. We hope to put on an event where drivers will be able to share their love of cars with the Oregon community while supporting the future engineers of America. Please contact us at the email address below if you are interested in volunteering. Emailing us will entail no commitment, and we will simply put you on a list so we may contact you for your input and send you updates as the event develops. We want to make this as enjoyable and exciting as possible!

What we do: Over four years ago, the OSU CBEE Student Chapter was established as a campus organization in response to the formation of the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering. The organization stems primarily from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Student Chapter which was established on campus in 1949, but now also incorporates the Society of Biological Engineers (SBE) Student Chapter and the Environmental Engineers Student Organization (EESO). As our three student organizations become one, we are actively developing a student chapter that meets the unique needs of our hybrid department.
Our purpose is to develop a mentality of professionalism by networking with professors, industry affiliates, and other students in order to develop a community that supports the academic pursuits of its members. This is done every year through meetings that emphasize professional development, student community building, and public service projects. Our chapter sends students to both national and regional conferences where they are able to participate in academic competitions as well as bring home practical ideas that can be used to improve the student chapter. This academic year, we will be hosting the 2011 Pacific Northwest Regional AIChE Student Conference in Corvallis, which stresses the importance of this year’s fundraising initiative.

Our student chapter not only helps CBEE students to succeed in their academic pursuits but brings national attention to our engineering department and, consequentially, engineering in Oregon through our involvement on the national scale. In 10 out of the past 11 years, we have been named one of the Outstanding AIChE Student Chapters, a title held only by the top 9% of over 165 student chapters nationwide.
