This is none of my business, but you were really considering a M3/M5 for your son's first car? How old is he?! What halted you to not buy a car for him then and there in the first place? If you do get the M3, I hope he can drive a Manual transmission car, but there's a Dual Clutch Transmission coming out for the M3 soon. Gears will be changed with either a shift lever or paddle shifters. The M5 has paddle shifters with a SMG transmission available, you might know since you test drove one (unless it was the 6 speed version). Sorry for all the questions/comments, but I find this topic pretty interesting as I am a BMW enthusiast.
