Matthew, that brake behaviour is all about brake pads, seems they installed racing pads, in my former Porsche 944 Turbo I used EBC red stuff, they stopped right from touching the pedal.
Trunk strut is a common stabilus strut, NAPA etc should be able to give you a similar replacement, measure the length and the Nm written on the strut and you get one for ca. $30.
