Peter-

There are three key things IMO to having a top-notch garage. The first one, as Raymondo mentioned, is an epoxy floor. I used the Rustoleum Professional Grade stuff, two coats, and it looks beautiful and is tough as nails. You don't want you use the Home version which is water-based, it is not as tough and you will get some hot-tire pickup.

The second key is the lighting. I recommend installing a few rows of recessed lights with a normal incandescent color. Between the epoxy floor and recessed lighting, your garage will look like a mini showroom. It sucks to have a beautiful car with a nice professional looking epoxy floor and just a hard flourescent light shining on everything.

The last key is to get as much stuff up off the floor as possible. By hanging everything you possibly can, you will have a ton of floor space freed up, and having lots of floor space will make the garage look more spacious inside. I mounted a bunch of peg boards from Home Depot to hang all my tools, and I hung some ladder hooks too.

Good luck!
