I have driven the 2004 Gallardo E-gear for over 7,000 miles. I push the car hard and have had no E-gear problems. In "Auto" mode the shifts are not crisp, and the system keeps selecting a higher gear than one would probably normally select, so the torque is not great when you stomp on it, but the car quickly downshifts and you get moving after the initial lag.
E-gear is not really meant to be an automatic in the traditional sense. The automatic mode is used primarily in slow traffic in cities, etc. or on the open road where you are going a long distance at a constant speed. When the E-gear system is in automatic, I have not found mine to be rough or jerky. It is simply slower and less responsive. I will definitely spec my next Gallardo with E-gear.
I hope this helps you with your decision.
