Mike and George would be the experts, but i would think those base plates were made in such a way that you do not need the velocity stacks.
i can drive my cars year round here in Georgia. i totally agree that in the dead heat of summer that a "airbox" would be a bit better as the carbs can breathe in air that is cooler than the hot engine bay. however, i still prefer the individual aircleaners as i can work on the motor ( change plugs, minor things) with them installed.
i would consider running the individual air cleaners until euro airboxes can be found.
