Reiter Engineering, the company responsible for building and developing the various race-prepared Lamborghini Murcielago R-GTs, will now run the car in competition on a full-time basis.
Under a new arrangement between Reiter and Automobili Lamborghini, the R-GT competition programme will continue in 2005, with the German engineering company taking sole control of the project. Reiter has built all the R-GTs to date, but has said that it will limit future production and sales to just five cars.
Previous competition deals between Lamborghini and teams in both the FIA GT and American Le Mans Series have faltered in the past twelve months, with both French team DAMS and US-based Krohn-Barbour Racing complaining of a lack of support and development from the parent company. Both teams have since switched their attention away from production-based sportscars, with DAMS adding a GP programme to its Renault World Series single-seater operation, and Krohn-Barbour co-owner Tracy Krohn switching over to the Grand-Am Daytona Prototype scene.
As a result, Reiter, which ran the R-GT in its original outings, will run at least one car, probably in the FIA GT series, while also providing customer support, a spare parts service and technical advice for any potential 'outside' entries from its base in Kirchanschöring. Having built up a detailed knowledge of the Murciélago, Reiter will also provide technical upgrades for the car.
